What insurers are licensed to write
Each of the 4,517 entities carries one licence class as recorded by its supervisor, or inferred from its name where the register does not state one (the EIOPA register for EU/EEA undertakings). Composite licences, which allow both life and non-life business, survive mainly in markets that have not yet mandated separation.
General (Non-life)
Short-term property, casualty, motor, marine and other non-life covers.
Captive / Risk retention group
Captives, risk retention groups, sponsored cells and special-purpose reinsurers licensed in a captive domicile to insure their owners’ risks.
Life
Long-term life assurance, annuities, pensions and savings products.
Health / Medical
Medical, health and hospital cash insurers licensed separately from life.
Reinsurer
Carriers that accept risk ceded by primary insurers.
Specialty / Credit / Captive
Credit, trade, legal-expenses, captive, agricultural, statutory-scheme or other specialist carriers.
Composite
Licensed to write both life and non-life business under one entity.
Not stated in register
Solvency II undertakings whose register entry carries no class of business; usually non-life or composite.
