Maine has its own insurance supervisory authority, the Maine Bureau of Insurance. This profile brings together its regulatory contacts, NAIC research and the companies recorded as domiciled here in our directory.
Augusta is the capital. A US state since 1820, Maine is part of a state-based insurance system: a company's home jurisdiction and the markets where it is authorised to operate are different facts.
Within this directory's Maine domicile records, Life is the largest recorded class, with 3 entities. This describes the composition of our listings, not premium market share.

The department is the starting point for checking an insurer's authority, finding consumer assistance and following local regulatory announcements. Leadership details can change; use the official office link for the current incumbent.
Start with the legal company name on your policy and its NAIC company number, where available. A familiar brand may represent several separately licensed companies.
Use the department's insurer lookup to check authority in Maine. For complaint assistance, the NAIC directory links to each jurisdiction's department and complaint channel.
The National Association of Insurance Commissioners supports the 56 US insurance jurisdictions with shared data and regulatory coordination. The local insurance department remains the authority for questions about a company's licence in Maine.

Reporting year 2024 · NAIC state report card
The NAIC counted 1,292 licensed insurers across domestic and foreign categories.
In-state direct written premiums grew 75% between 2015 and 2024.
Captive insurers reported in the NAIC snapshot: 3.
Read the report's definitions before comparing states: premiums, insurer counts and directory domicile records measure different things. Figures retain their reporting year and should not be read as live totals.
NAIC market research reviewed 26 September 2026. State identity and office-selection facts come from the state reference dataset dated 23 September 2026; insurer counts are calculated from the directory's register records. Photographs illustrate places, not insurer or regulator offices.
Popularity is an estimate of how often people search Google for each insurer, from 0 to 100; the bars show how confident the estimate is. Not a rating of the insurer. How the index works
An insurer’s domicile is the state or territory where it is incorporated, and that jurisdiction’s regulator is its primary supervisor. Domicile here comes from the register rows: the Texas Department of Insurance register records each company’s state of domicile, and a captive on the Vermont captive register is domiciled in Vermont. A state’s list is therefore the insurers in this directory that call it home, not its regulator’s own register of every insurer it licenses.
To see where a company is licensed, use the NAIC’s national search, which covers every state: NAIC Consumer Insurance Search
Regulator details, nicknames and mottos were checked against the regulators’ own sites and public references on 23 Sept 2026. Flags are public-domain artwork. This is reference information, not register data.
