PartialPartially verified against the NAIC / state DOIs register, checked 8 Sept 2026.

The 4,157 insurance companies licensed in the United States in 2026, as recorded by the State insurance departments (50 states + DC + territories), coordinated through the NAIC; Federal Insurance Office (Treasury) monitors (NAIC / state DOIs), with the class of business and ownership each one is registered under.

Snapshot

By class of business

Each company is counted once, under the class its register row records. The supervisor’s own tally counts licences, so a company licensed for more than one class appears more than once there.

Governing legislation

  • State insurance laws and NAIC accreditation standards · Institutional and insurance framework

State and territorial insurance departments exercise regulatory authority. The NAIC supports coordination, model standards and financial surveillance; it is not a federal insurance licensing authority.

Verification log

2292 rows, one per entity; 508 Texas-domestic, ~1,780 foreign (other US states) and 14 alien insurers; class derived from TDI company type and licensed lines, except fraternal benefit societies and mortgage insurers: the 41 fraternals are classed L (Texas Insurance Code s.885.301 permits death, endowment, annuity, disability, hospital/medical and funeral benefits, and the published product range of each society was checked individually on 8 Sep 2026) and the 19 mortgage insurers are classed X; NAIC group given as code (names not in export). Knowledge rows for US carriers removed. Scope: presence in a TDI export is not a claim of unrestricted Texas direct-insurance authorisation - each row's registration category is in its Notes, and TDI states that accredited assuming insurers are authorised in their domicile but not in Texas. The TDI exports hold 2323 registrations covering 2292 entities: 28 carriers are registered under more than one category, and those 31 duplicate rows were merged on 8 Sep 2026 so this sheet now carries one row per entity, its Notes listing every registration oldest first (25 reinsurers registered under two or three of Trusteed / Certified / Reciprocal Jurisdic / Accredited, and 3 admitted insurers - Compass, Physicians Insurance A Mutual, Pillar Life - that are also accredited assuming reinsurers and keep their admitted class). The 1900 NAIC codes are unique. The Texas and Vermont segments do not overlap: one name (Celtic Insurance Company) appears in both and needs checking, everything else is disjoint 710 licensed captives, RRGs, sponsored cells and special-purpose life reinsurers with licence numbers, matching the DFR licence summary for 30 Jun 2026 (682 active + 28 dormant = 710 currently licensed); type inferred from name Extended state by state on a domicile basis: each state's own list of the insurers domiciled there, which partitions the national population without the double counting an admitted register would cause. States added in this pass: California (107), Connecticut (172), Delaware (153), Iowa (193), Illinois (325), Nebraska (132), New York (332), Ohio (245), Pennsylvania (214), Wisconsin (171). 870 rows matched and 1155 insurers added. The United States has no national register and the remaining jurisdictions are not covered, so the market stays partial. Each publishes a captive list; not fetched in this pass. Vermont is the largest US captive domicile (~660), followed by Utah, Delaware, North Carolina, South Carolina, Hawaii, Tennessee and Arizona
